Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is concerned with the appearance of a person's teeth, gums, and smile. It mainly focuses on improving the shape, color, size, alignment of teeth and appearance of the smile.

There are different procedures concerned with improving the appearance, ranging from simple ones such as scaling and polishing to orthodontics and prosthodontics.

It involves several procedures such as:

  • Addition of materials or dental structures such as veneers, crowns.
  • Removal of dental structures or gums as in gingivectomy.
  • Neither removing nor adding a dental structure or material as in teeth whitening and scaling.
  • Straightening of teeth to improve appearance as in orthodontics.

Examples:

Dental veneers are wafer-thin, custom-made shells designed to cover the frontal surface of teeth in order to improve their appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth, changing their color, shape, size or length.

Teeth whitening is one of the simplest ways to improve your smile. It can simply be done at home by oneself or at a dentist's clinic by a professional dentist.

Dental implants are artificial roots made of titanium, screwed into the hole drilled in a person's natural jawbone and fuses with it to hold a different type of artificial teeth, including bridges and crowns.

Dental bridges are a structure which is used to replace one or more missing teeth, which can either be due to cavities or external injuries.

A gum lift is a cosmetic dental procedure that's used to sculpt and raise the gum tissue. The procedure involves reshaping the gums, adding tissue to the gums, removing excess tissue from the gums, gum lift, etc. It helps in making the teeth look more symmetrical.

Prosthodontics which is concerned with the restoration of missing or deficient teeth.

Orthodontics is concerned with teeth alignment and treatment of improper bites. Braces and Invisalign are the popular devices used under this method.

Gingivectomy removes and reshapes loose and infected gum tissues. It is the best treatment for periodontal and gingivectomy.

Smile Design is concerned with a person's smile appearance.

How to choose the right procedure?

It is important to choose a good cosmetic dentist and together decide on the best procedure that is appropriate for the case. It also depends on what problem you're facing, such as missing teeth, gum problems or the appearance of your smile. So first determine the problem. Then find the best solution for treating it along with the dentist.
